NBC’s news Twitter account was hacked and sent several fake tweets about an attack on Ground Zero similar of the attack on September 11, 2001.
Some of the tweets included:
Breaking News! Ground Zero has just been attacked. Flight 5736 has crashed into the site, suspected hijacking. More as the story develops”
“Flight 4782 is not responding, suspected hijacking. One plane just hit Ground Zero site at 5:47”
“This is not a joke, Ground Zero has just been attacked. We’re attempting to get reporters on the scene.”
And the last tweet was: “NBCNEWS hacked by The Script Kiddies.”
Vivian Schiller, NBC News chief digital officer, tweeted the following on her Twitter account: “Ignore tweets from @nbcnews till further notice. We’ve been hacked. Do not retweet”
Anchor Brian Williams read a statement on the NBC Nightly News Friday night confirming that the network was working with Twitter to correct the situation.
The FBI has also confirmed that the computer crimes division is investigating the incident.
