Westell SPW Span Powers and Protects Your Network Interface Unit

Westell Technologies, Inc., provider of broadband products, outside plant telecommunications equipment and conferencing services, has released its SPW2800 span powering and protection system capable of providing power for 28 T1 network interface unit.

The SPW system has a performance monitoring (NIU-PMs) and provides transient protection as well as overvoltage protection for the upstream multiplexer (MUX). It works with any manufacturer’s MUX and is installed between the MUX and the T1 NIU-PM point of demarcation service hand-off to the customer.

“The key benefits of the SPW system are improvements in uptime and opex,” says Brian Powers, senior vice president of Westell‘s OSPlant Systems Division. “Not only will it eliminate the need for local power at the T1 NIU, but it also will reduce service outages for telco operators by providing transient protection.”

The SPW system is temperature hardened and provides span power to the remote T1 NIU-PMs while providing secondary lightning and power cross protection for the MUX.

“An ideal application for the SPW system is in a cellular radio access network location where T1 transport circuits are used to backhaul cellular traffic to the central office,” adds Powers.

The 2RU-high SPW2800 system can be mounted in either 19″ or 23″ relay racks, in outdoor or indoor equipment cabinets, or on a wall with the provided mounting ears.

Westell Technologies, Inc. is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois and is a holding company for Westell, Inc. and Conference Plus, Inc. Westell, Inc. It designs, distributes, markets and services a broad range of broadband networking equipment, digital transmission products, remote monitoring tools, power distribution equipment, industrial-grade edge switches and demarcation products used by telecommunications service providers, utilities and other enterprises.
