Authorities Claim 64 Percent Voting in Kashmir Election

Srinagar, Nov 30: The authorities in Kashmir on Sunday evening claimed that 64 percent voting was recorded in the five constituencies that went to the polls on Sunday.

Giving a break-up of the poll percentage of the constituencies, top civil official of Kashmir, Masoud Samoon said that the highest of 79 percent polling was recorded in the Karnah segment followed by 64 percent in Lolab, 61 percent in Kupwara, 60 cent in Handwara and 57 percent in the Langate constituency.

He said the voter turnout in these five constituencies was a marked increase over the poll percentage of 54.58 recorded in 2002 Assembly elections. He added that Karnah had recorded voter turnout 65.37 percent in 2002 Assembly elections while it was 55.23 percent in Kupwara, 46.89 percent in Lolab, 51.48 percent in Handwara and 53.97 percent in the Langate constituency in the 2002 Assembly Elections.

He said that the poll percentage is likely to go up as the figures from 38 polling booths are still awaited.

Meanwhile, long queues of people were seen in the polling booths in most of the assembly segments that went to polling on Sunday. People, who caste their votes said that they have not voted against Kashmir cause. “We have voted for development, but freedom is our dream and we will achieve it,” said a youth, Aijaz Ahmad at a polling station in Kulangam, Handwara.
