US Rejects Russia’s Land Grab in Crimea

US does not recognized annexation of Crimea to Russia

Denouncing the referendum in Crimea, the United States of America today slammed the annexation of Crimea to Russia.

Media reports say, majority of citizens in Crimea voted for a breakaway and will join Russia as the referendum push through this week.

In her remarks in New York, US Permanent Representative to UN Samanthan Power said the United States rejects Russia’s military intervention and land grab in Crimea.

She said Russia’s actions violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, Russia’s own binding agreements, international law, the expressed will of most members of this Council, and the letter and spirit of the United Nations Charter.

legal status of Crimea has not changed

Amid the turnout of election that majority of Crimeans voted to join Russia, the United States asserted that the legal status of Crimea has not changed and rejects military movement in Crimea.

Ms. Power highlighted that ussia’s intervention in Ukraine and for making clear that Russia stands alone in its failed, illogical, and mendacious attempt to justify actions that cannot be justified.

In addition, Ms. Power pointed out that the Security Council accurately described the Crimean separatist referendum as invalid, only a single hand rose in opposition.

She sais even if the referendum has taken place, the national and international legal status of Crimea has not changed.

Referendum in Crimea is not valid

Ms. Power emohasized that what Russia has done is wrong as a matter of law, wrong as a matter of history, wrong as a matter of policy, and dangerous.

“What happened in Crimea cannot be recognized as valid. We must stand together denying recognition and imposing consequences for this illegal act.” – Ms. Power

She reiterated clearly that what happened in Crimea cannot be repeated in other parts of Ukraine as well.

Annexation of Crimea to Russia strongly denounced by US and EU

Earlier this week, the United States of America expressed strong opposition after Crimea voted to split from Ukraine and be absorbed by Russia.

Yesterday, the citizens of Crimea overwhelmingly supported a referendum to secede from Ukraine and join Russia.

Prior to the holding of the referendum, United States and its allies have dubbed the referendum as unconstitutional and illegal.

The US government asserted that referendum on Crimea must be conducted within the bounds of Ukrainian law and the United States joins with others in calling for its suspension.

The US also called on the Russian Federation to halt its military intervention and refrain from any further actions in support of this illegitimate and destabilizing effort.

Amid US disapproval, the voting continued. The referendum offered voters the choice of joining Russia or remaining in Ukraine with greater independence.

Why Russia is holding on Crimea

Crimea is home to many ethnic Russians and strategically important to Russia. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is based in Crimea providing Russia’s navy access to the Mediterranean Sea.

The Kiev government, the Obama administration and its allies claimed the referendum is unconstitutional. They said the referendum is not nationwide and violates international agreements.

With the self-determination of Crimea made possible, there is an apprehension that it would set an example for other breakaway regions around the world.
