Seven People Killed, 10 Injured in Assam Militant Attack

Guwahati: At least seven people were killed and 10 others injured, when suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants had opened fire on a group of people, who were busy on the occasion of Diwali in Assam’s Goalpara district along the Meghalaya border on Sunday night, officials said.

The incident took place at Gendabari area under Agia police station in the bordering district of Assam and Meghalaya around 9 pm on Sunday.

“The armed militants had opened fire on a group of people gambling on the occasion of Diwali at the remote area by using automatic sophisticated weapons,” a top police official said.

Six persons died on the spot and 11 others were seriously injured in the militants attack.

The injured persons had rushed to Goalpara civil hospital and Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

“An injured person succumbed to his injuries at hospital,” the police official said.

The deceased persons were identified as Janmajoy Rabha, Jayanta Rabha, Nunu Rabha, Charan Rabha, Kalpana Rabha, Bholanath Rabha and Tapash Rabha.

Top police officials had rushed to the remote bordering area and launched operation against the militants.

Goalpara district has been witnessing violence since October 20 with protests against the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council election, which was declared by the Assam State Election Commission as elections will be held between November 13 and 15.

Recently, a person was killed and several injured in clash between police and protesters in the district.
