Assam Flood Affects 57,000 People

The flood situation in Assam took a serious turn on Thursday as more villages in Dhemaji district were inundated by flood waters.

Over 100 villages across the state were inundated and more than 57,000 people were affected so far in the first wave flood.

According to the state government officials, 10 more villages have been affected in worst-hit Dhemaji district taking total to 36.

More than 37,000 people have been affected in the flood.

“The flood situation turned more serious in the district followed by torrential rains in Arunachal Pradesh and water level of Jiadhal river has gradually increased,” a district administration official said.

The flood victims left their homes and took shelter in schools, highways and highlands and there has been no casualty so far,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the affected people alleged they have not received any relief from the district administration.

A top official of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that apart from Dhemaji, 70 more villages have been affected in Golaghat, Kamrup, Karimganj and Jorhat districts and more than 20,000 people are afftected in the districts.

Flood waters had damaged six bridges in Golaghat district.

The flood waters also submerged over 1100 hectares of agricultural land in the districts.
