US Citizens Donate Medicines to Somali People

With some Mogadishu hospitals running out of medicines, Somalia’s transitional federal government on Friday said that some American people sent shipments of medicines to Somalia. The medicines will be distributed to local hospitals, the top government official told reporters.

State minister of Somali prime minister’s office Khalid Ali Omar told a press conference in Mogadishu Friday that US citizens donated this medicine to Somalia because he said they are very worried bout the terrible unhealthy situations under which Somali people live.

“Somali government is thanking the US people for their brotherly assistance and we will hand it out to the hospitals where hundreds of seriously wounded civilians are being treated” the Somali minister said.

The presentation of the medicine donated by the American people to Somalis comes as some Mogadishu hospitals where hundreds of wounded civilians are admitted every week are running out of medicine, according to doctors.

Somalia’s restive capital experiences daily armed confrontations and as a result, civilians are taking the brunt of the endless violence in the city where dozens of vulnerable people are daily hospitalized.

Despite the worst ever incident that Americans met outside their homeland in 1993 (Black Howk Down) when 18 US soldiers were dragged through the Mogadishu streets, the US government is still the biggest donor nation to Somalia, compared to other countries in the world.

America is also helping Somali youths in neighboring Kenya, to unite and forget the past hostility under football for peace competitions organized by the US embassy in Kenya, but doesn’t have direct co-operation with the Somali football federation which is rehabilitating hundreds of former child soldiers and street boys under football training programs in Mogadishu.

Some of the former child soldiers were included into the national team after they were taught football well, according to Somali football federation president Mr. Said Mahmoud Nur.
