Scream Awards 2008: An Experience Like No Other

Spike TV’s SCREAM Awards honors the talent in the genres of horror, science fiction, fantasy, and comic books — the one event that where the sick, twisted, freaks, and geeks come together. Tuesday’s airing of this year’s Scream Awards at the Greek Theatre featured live performances from Kerli and The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as exclusive world premieres of Twilight, Watchmen, and the new Friday The 13th.

The Dark Knight was not only the top movie of the summer, but it was also the top winner racking a dozen Scream Awards — including the Ultimate Scream, Best Supporting Performance for Gary Oldman of his portrayal as honest Gotham cop James Gordon; the late Heath Ledger was named both Best Fantasy Actor and Villain for his Oscar buzz take on the Joker, the Crown Prince of Crime. Iron Man took home two for Best Science Fiction Movie and Actor for Robert Downey, Jr., who’s in London shooting a upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie.

Dexter beat out Heroes, Battlestar Galatica, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for Best TV Show, while Milla Jovovich was named Best Science Fiction Actress for Resident Evil: Extinction. “I thought this was a microphone” she joked when accepting the award. “I feel like the coolest mom in town. This is really wonderful.”

Tim Burton, Wes Craven, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and George Lucas were among the legends being honored that evening for their contribution delighting — and frightening — filmgoers. For his work that includes Beetlejuice, Batman and the sequel Batman Returns, Burton was given the Scream Immortal Award by co-star Winona Ryder. Craven was honored the Mastermind Award — for A Nightmare on Elm Street and the Scream trilogy, to name among a few. The Oscar-winning Hopkins won the Legend Award for his turn as Hannibal Lecter, while Lucas surprised the audience when coming on stage with Stormtroopers to accept the award for Comic Con Icon.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have the support of the creative community behind the fantasy, science fiction, horror, and comic book genres” stated senior vice president of event production for Spike TV and SCREAM 2008 Casey Patterson. “We’re thrilled to honor the unbelievably imaginative films, television, and comics of the year and beyond, from the twisted to the fantastical. This is what makes SCREAM an experience like no other for the most passionate fan base in the world.”
