The Burning Man 2008 Project Starts Today

Though summer is coming to an end, things will continue to heat up with this year’s Burning Man Project, which starts today and continues up until Labor Day. This will take place in the Black Rock Desert, which is 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada.

Founded by Larry Harvey and Jerry James, Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community that is devoted to radical self-expression, radical self-reliance, and art. The mission statement includes the desire to generate society that connects every person to his or her creative powers in getting involved with community participation, to the large realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society — believing this will lead to spiritual changes.

Since 1986, the Project has grown from a few people gathering spontaneously to a group of 48,000 people.

The art theme for this year is the “American Dream”, in which it deals with nationality, identity, and the nature of patriotism — asking questions such as “What can America, this stumbling, roused, half-conscious giant, still contribute to the world?”, and “What can we dream America to be?”

The sale for tickets has been extended, but they won’t be sold at the box office. Tickets can still be bought online until midnight Tuesday for $295.

However, if you’re not able to make it, then you can still see the Burning Man, live on your television screen, next Saturday at 9pm on the cable Current channel.
