Michelle Bachelet Wins Chile Presidential Poll

The new president promises social changes in Chile

Dr. Michelle Bachelet has won a presidential election with a majority vote of 62%.

Dr Bachelet’s closest rival Evelyn Matthei of Chile’s ruling conservative coalition concede defeat on Sunday.

According to media reports, the 62-year-old Bachelet will take office on March 11. The new leader will take over the conservative billionaire President Sebastian Pinera’s seat for a term running through 2018.

Who is Dr. Bachelet?

Dr. Bachelet first served as Chile’s first woman president back in 2006-2010. Sge was Chile’s first female president.

In 2010 Bachelet left with highest approval rating of 84%. later, went on to lead UN Women.

Dr Bachelet was born in September 1951 in Santiago. Her father Alberto was an air force officer, and her mother Angela was an archeologist.

US Congratulates Dr. Michelle Bachelet’s election as Chile’s new president

In a press statement in Washington DC, Deputy Department Spokesperson Marie Harf cogratulated Dr. Michelle Bachelet on her election as the next President of Chile.

“The Chilean people have once again demonstrated their commitment to democratic values.” – Ms. Harf

She said since its successful transition from a military government, Chile has emerged as a model of democratic governance.

US enjoys strong partnership with US

Ms. Harf said the United States and Chile share a robust relationship based on the two countries commitment to those democratic ideals, human rights and economic opportunity.

“We value the warm collaboration we have enjoyed during President Pinera’s administration.” – Ms. Harf

The Obama Adminstration is also looking forward to working with President-elect Michelle Bachelet when the new administration takes office in March.

US and Chile enjoy a robust rwelations which can be traced to the nineteenth century. The relation between two countris has improved in the period in 1988 up to this time.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s the United States government applauded the rebirth of democratic practices in Chile.

Chile is dubbed as one of the least corrupt and most vibrant democracies in South America with a healthy economy. The country is known for being one of the closest strategic allies of the United States in the Southern Hemisphere.
