Chile Celebrates its National Day

The citizens of Chile today celebrated their Independence Day.

Chile is said to be one of South America’s most stable and prosperous nations. It leads Latin American nations in human development, competitiveness, income per capita, globalization, economic freedom, and low perception of corruption. In 2006, Chile also became the country with the highest nominal GDP per capita in Latin America, according to Wikipedia.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Chile.

“Chile and the United States have enjoyed a history of cooperation and mutual respect. We share many of the same values, including a commitment to the rule of law, human rights, and open trade.” -Ms. Clinton

She stressed that both countries are working to curb the effects of climate change, strengthen democratic institutions, protect human rights and promote renewable energy.

She cited that last year’s earthquake and mine collapse and the daring rescue of those brave miners is a reminder of Chile’s unshakeable will and national spirit.

“As you celebrate this special day and reflect on all that you have accomplished, know that the United States is committed to expanding our cooperation as we work toward a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous world. Have a safe and happy Independence Day celebration.” -Ms. Clinton

Chile is known for its over 3,000 species of fungi, but this number is far from complete. Reports say the true total number of fungal species occurring in Chile is likely to be far higher.
