Justin Trudeau Elected New Prime Minister of Canada

Trudeau and Liberty Party dominate 2015 federal election

Hoping to get elected the fourth time, incumbent prime minister Stephen Harper lost the election this time to Justin Trudeau in the race to be the prime minister of Canada.

In a dramatic election, a majority of Canadian citizens have spoken and elected Justin Trudeau as the new prime minister.

Trudeau’s Liberal party also won a majority, taking 184 of the 338 seats in parliament.

The young prime minister is expected to be sworn in on the 15th of November.

The outgoing prime minister, Stephen Harper, has held the position since February 2006.

Who is Justin Trudeau?

The new prime minister is the son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau who spent part of his childhood in 24 Sussex, the prominent place where the Canadian prime ministers live.

The 43 year old Trudeau made his first appearance in national politics in September 2000.

Before entering the political arena, he was a teacher, and taught drama, French, maths and youth advocacy.

Trudeau included in his platforms the plan to end Canada’s combat mission as part of the US-led coalition against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The young politician made prominent in his campaign humanitarian efforts particularly in his commitment to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada.

US Congratulates the New Prime Minister

In a press statement in Washington DC, US Secretary of State John Kerry said the US congratulates Prime Minister-designate Trudeau and the Liberal Party on their victory in Canada’s national election.

“I look forward to working closely with Prime Minister-designate Trudeau and his government to further enhance our close cooperation.” – Secretary Kerry

In his remarks, Secretary Kerry expressed appreciation of Prime Minister Harper and the members of his government for their contributions to the US-Canada bilateral relationship and to international peace and prosperity.

“We greatly valued our collaboration to increase trade between our nations, strengthen border security, and enhance the North American partnership.” – Secretary Kerry

US Values Relations With Canada

Secretary Kerry said the United States and Canada are allies, partners, and most of all, friends.

The two nations do not only have the longest land border in the world, but also the largest trade relationship in the world.

“Our commitment to shared prosperity for the benefit of both of our nations is unparalleled.” – Secretary Kerry.

He stressed that the American people deeply value the time-tested partnership and common democratic heritage, and will continue to draw upon that foundation to partner with Canada to promote its shared values globally.
