Vanuatu Celebrates Its Independence Day

The citizens of Vanuatu today celebrated their Natioal Day.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Vanuatu

on their National Day.

“Since establishing diplomatic ties fifteen years ago, the United States and Vanuatu have forged a relationship that has grown stronger through our shared commitment to strengthening democracy, enhancing security and promoting development.” -Ms. Clinton

Ms. Clinton stated that just recently both countries have completed a project together through the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which rehabilitated two busy national roads and improved the capacity of the Public Works Department to manage Vanuatu’s transport network.

“The United States is committed to the future of Vanuatu and the South Pacific region. As you celebrate thirty-one years of independence, know that the United States remains a partner and friend. I wish all in Vanuatu a year of peace and prosperity.” -Ms. Clinton

Vanuatu is an island archipelago consisting of relatively small and geologically newer islands of volcanic origin.
