Yemen Reform A Concern For Nobel Laureate Tawakkul Karman

The President of the UN General Assembly and Nobel laureate Tawakkul Karman discussed developments in her native Yemen in a meeting at UN Headquarters in New York, Friday.

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser congratulated Ms. Karman, a journalist and pro-democracy activist on her award of the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor she shared with Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee, and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

The discussion included the wider pro-reform movement across the Middle East and North Africa.

Mr Al-Nasser called her “a global symbol of women’s empowerment who has brought honour and pride to all women, especially in the Arab world.”

For months, top UN officials have been voicing

There is growing concern about the human rights and humanitarian conditions in Yemen. Although there are no official figures, many reports say hundreds of people have died this year, since the start of mass protests against the Yemeni Government.

The uprising in Yemen is part of a wider pro-democracy movement across the region, dubbed the “Arab Spring,” that began at the start of this year and has already toppled long-standing regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
