Group B finished tonight without much surprise as Argentina and South Korea both advanced at the cost of Greece and Nigeria.
Greece were hoping for at least a point against Argentina but they also needed the result to swing their way in the other game. Going for a win against Argentina therefore seemed the sensible thing but instead they set up for a draw, stopping the South Americans at every turn and marking Messi out of the game.
This tactic worked until the final ten minutes when Demichelis smashed Argentina into the lead. Greece tried to turn on the attack but it was too late and with just a couple of minutes left on the clock Palermo made it 2-0 after some fine play by Messi.
Even if Greece had drawn, as they set out to do, it wouldn’t have been enough as South Korea also drew to Nigeria. Uche opened the scoring for the Nigerians in that game as the African side set out looking for a win and an upset. Goals from Lee and Park put South Korea ahead either side of half time though before Yakubu gave Nigeria their only point of the tournament when converting a penalty to make it 2-2.
Nigeria finish bottom of the Group and Greece go home whilst Argentina face Mexico in the next round and South Korea go up against Uruguay.
An exciting and eventful day of football as the first Groups finished. Tomorrow we look forward to seeing how England and USA fair as well as watching the climax of the group which holds Ghana, Germany, Australia and Serbia; a Group that can still go to any of the four teams.
