Red Wings and Stanley Flying High

Though the Tigers are being tamed and the Pistons shooting short of the NBA Finals once again, the Red Wings made the Motor City known as Detroit not only Hockeytown once more, but also Sportstown. For the fourth time in eleven years, they brought home the Stanley Cup, as they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 with the score of 3-2.

It was almost going to be like on Monday back at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, with the Penguins tying it up at the last minute — or, in this case, the last second. Pittsburgh evened it up on Game 5 with 3-3 that went straight to triple overtime that seemed like it would have taken all night. It seems like the Wings was going to close it and win at home. However, the Penguins weren’t going down without a fight, as they won 4-3.

Now, last night, with the people of both cities watching whether it would be a Game 7 or not, the Wings came to Pittsburgh with one goal in mind: bringing Stanley back home to Detroit. With less than a minute on the clock, it was all or nothing for Pittsburgh, as they had one last chance to win and stay in the game. In the final seconds, the Penguins was close but not close enough, as Detroit proved that they can still have Wings to fly.

Henrik Zetterberg won the Conn Smythe Trophy as he’s been named playoff MVP, and this has been the first for Nikolas Lindstrom to win the Cup as a team captain from Europe. Lindstrom has been with the Wings winning the other three with then-captain Steve Yzerman back-to-back in 1997 and 1998, and again 2002.

The celebration parade will be held this Friday at 11am in downtown Detroit.
