A petition that has the signatures of 18 Republican Congressional members is already being signed, demanding the release of prisoners arrested by the Chinese Government on crimes of religion.
It is being addressed to Zhou Wenzhong, the Chinese Ambassador to America, and charged the Chinese Government with violating the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, Article 18, co-signed by China:
“Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance.”
The committee stated that hosting the Summer Olympics was an honor and respect for the entire world as a symbol of human dignity as well as showing world unanimity – both of which are being ignored by China.
The signatories, all Congressional Republicans, expect an answer from the Chinese Government before the games begin on August 8.
