Mark Hardie Is Eying 2030 California’s Secretary of State

There is much to tell about the go-getter, multifaceted Mark Hardie.

Mark Hardie’s path to politics runs through law school, military service, conversion to the Jewish faith, and decades of public service ambition.

Now the Southern California resident says he wants to enter California’s political arena with a 2030 run for the Secretary of State position.

Hardie, a Black American from Long Beach, California, describes public service as the next step in a life shaped by education, faith, military duty, and human-rights advocacy.

Mark Hardie Looks Toward California Politics

Hardie says he plans to seek the office of California Secretary of State in 2030.

This office oversees California’s elections, statewide voter guides, ballot measures, campaign finance filings, lobbyist registration, business filings, and the state’s archives.

California remains a difficult state for Republicans seeking statewide office. In May 2026 CalMatters reported that since 2006 no Republican has won a statewide race in California.

Hardie says that to be heard he intends to run on the Democrat ticket.

That decision marks another turn in a long political life. In 1997, J. Weekly described Hardie as a lifelong Republican who had accepted a special assistant role with Pete Wilson, then-California’s Governor

Education and Early Public Service

Hardie earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in political science from the University of California, Riverside.

He later earned a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, now known as UC Law San Francisco. The school says it was established in 1878 as the first law school in the University of California system.

Hardie also studied as an international student at the University Of Costa Rica Faculty Of Law.

During his senior year at UC Riverside, Hardie attended a Summer Conservative Student Conference in Washington, D.C. He later worked around well-known conservative figures, including former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III, former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Angela “Bay” Buchanan, a conservative political commentator, Dinesh D’Souza, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Judaism Shapes Mark Hardie’s Public Mission

Hardie was born Roman Catholic but later converted to Orthodox Judaism.

He has written publicly about that journey, saying he first underwent a Reform conversion in San Francisco and later completed an Orthodox conversion at the Rabbinical Court of Los Angeles.

For Hardie, Judaism became more than a private faith. It became a public mission.

He says the Jewish tradition strengthened his belief in life, liberty, charity, personal responsibility, and respect for others.

In 1997, J. Weekly reported that Hardie wore a kippah* and tzitzit* while working for then California Governor Pete Wilson and saw educational value in being an African-American Jew working in largely Black communities.

Hardie’s personal and family motto is “Higher Than Honor.”

Army Veteran and Human-rights Advocate

After the horrific September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., Hardie joined the U.S. Army.

The Times of Israel Newspaper’s bio’s author describes Mark as a U.S. Army veteran and recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

Hardie says his public interests include human rights, women’s and girls’ empowerment, poverty alleviation, education, and working to bring peace to the world.

He also says he speaks Spanish, Hebrew, and conversational Persian, AKA Farsi.

Mark Hardie Prepares for 2030

Hardie’s supporters see his unusual background as a political asset.

He brings law, public service, military experience, Jewish faith, and a life story rooted in Long Beach, California.

For now, the 2030 political race remains years away.

But Mark Hardie says his next public mission is clear: a run for California’s Secretary of State.

With Mark’s remarkable background we, the people, can expect nothing but much success in his upcoming political endeavor.

Mark Hardie also uses his X account to comment on politics, public life and his planned 2030 run for California Secretary of State.
