The first case of a government leaker divulging privileged information has resulted in an arrest. It promises to be the first of many to come as the DOJ aggressively investigates the proliferation of high-level government leaking to the media.
It brings to mind the small article in 1972 the Washington Post printed about a break-in at the Democratic National Party headquarters in Washington, DC. The rest of that story is history.
The heart of the investigation is headed towards former members of the Obama administration. A case in point is Rep. Trey Gowdy’s (R-SC) testy hearing questions directed at former Obama CIA Director John Brennan, who recently testified before the House Intelligence Committee on the Russia investigation.
Washington-insiders are aware that the Russia “investigation” is more political than substance. It was no surprise that Brennan had nothing new to say since there is no evidence whatsoever of any crime.
There never has been.
But there was one part of the interaction between the two men that gained no publicity that may prove interesting. It may very well put former President Barack Obama in a bad light.
As expected, Brennan had not personally seen any collusion between Trump and the Russian government. But then Gowdy quizzed the former CIA Director on whether any Ambassadors had requested the unmasking of U.S. citizens caught up in surveillance. A surprised Brennan reacted as if he didn’t see that question coming.
It was a simple question that didn’t appear to be a smoking gun of any sort. However, Trey Gowdy, a former prosecutor, was planting the seeds for his other agenda concerning Brennan.
A little background is necessary. The House Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed Brennan, former National Security Advisor Susan Rice, and former U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power to testify about the unmasking of U.S. citizens and illegal leaks of classified information to the media.
These would be serious crimes. As each day passes, the hysterical media’s accusations and unproven innuendo are becoming the definition of “fake news.” It is becoming clearer that the so-called Russia scandal is nothing but an invention by the Democrats and pushed by their media partners to cripple Trump’s administration through scandal.
Most well-read Americans are beginning to realize this political stunt. But that does not excuse the massive leaks of classified information. Are these the names of U.S. citizens caught up in the Obama administration’s surveillance? If so, that is a felony. Not innuendo, “confidential former government official sources,” etc. These could be fact-based felonies.
The time of rabid headlines with no substance are coming to an end five-months into Trump’s presidency. The situation is now becoming clear. Congressional Republicans are zeroing in on actual criminal conduct. That could spell bad news for Barack Obama and the former Obama Trump-haters within his administration. There is no more relief from the old and corrupt Obama Department of Justice willing to turn a blind eye to felonious behavior.
The committee is now focusing on subpoenas that demand any information related to unmasking requests by former National Security Advisor Susan Rice and John Brennan. Both were in powerful positions with Brennan as Obama’s director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
It is all beginning to make sense where the classified leaks may be coming from. Forget the recent small fry that was highly publicized when caught. Remember the Watergate burglars?
The CIA is in the business of gathering and analyzing foreign intelligence outside the United States. In that capacity, the CIA routinely makes judgments about whether identities of Americans should be unmasked. The tables are beginning to turn and now the hysterical left is being hauled over the carpet to answer for the serious legal ramifications.
The question now is: what were the reasons for Trump officials being unmasked? Personal political vendettas are on the tongues of many involved in the investigation. That will not bode well in a court of law. More than that, who ordered the unmasking and did they act alone?
The proverbial shoe is now on the other foot. We should expect the seriousness of the alleged crimes will force the left-leaning media to actually report the truth. Furthermore, were the names unmasked for legitimate purposes, or were they unmasked for political gossip so they could be leaked to the press in order to facilitate negative stories about the Trump administration?
These are questions that will demand answers. Not only are the alleged crimes political in nature, they are a direct threat to the national security of the country. The crimes may have been perpetrated by the very people who were supposed to serve to prevent that sort of thing. The impact could make Richard Nixon’s Watergate Scandal look like childs play.
So who did violate the law by leaking classified information? The answer could put many from the Obama administration in serious legal jeopardy. It is a potential windfall for abuse of power. This has the potential of being a profound abuse of power in the nature of a high crime and misdemeanor.
Ironically, it is exactly what the Constitution defines as a predicate for impeachment. That is exactly what the hysterical far-left demands for Trump, led by the fanatical and farcical Rep. Maxine Waters. Anyone in the biased media care to get her comment on all this?
If the Obama administration released the intelligence community as a political weapon against the Trump campaign, it will be one of the, if not the biggest, political scandals in American history. The distraction of some Russian conspiracy will quickly be replaced by a fact-based downfall of some of America’s most powerful former top government officials.
