Michigan’s Rep. John Dingell on Friday became the longest-serving member of Congress in US history, with 20,996 days in office.
Reports say Rep. Dingell’s congressional service has surpasse the longevity record previously held by the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia.
Dingell is a Democrat and has served in the House of Representatives for 57 years. He was reportedly sworn in on Dec. 14, 1955.

Ambassador Goosby say Rep. Dingell has made an indelible impact in the health arena, both at home and abroad.
“I want to personally thank Rep. Dingell for his support of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and for his longstanding efforts on behalf of the Ryan White Care Act.” – Ambassador Goosby.
In addition, Rep. Dingell has advocated for agencies that partner with PEPFAR, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the Health Resources and Services Administration.

He stresses that the 10 years of success that PEPFAR celebrates this year would not be possible without the breathtaking investment that Congress has made in its lifesaving work.
The US government is grateful for Rep. Dingell’s remarkable contributions to improving public health throughout his long and storied career.

Reports say a bicameral ceremony is scheduled for June 13 in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall to honor his service.
