Top 5 US TV Shows You Should Be Watching

Fall is the most anticipated season in the TV calendar with a host of shows returning for new seasons and others hitting our screens for the first time.

To help navigate what’s on offer, here is a list of the top five highly rated and critically acclaimed shows on television right now. The following TV shows have been picked from what’s currently available online on Rogers On Demand, a Canadian cable company, and provide a mixed bag of drama, comedy and family entertainment.

New Girl

Off-beat Jess, seeking solace from a relationship that has gone awry, moves into an apartment with three strangers. Winston is an erstwhile athlete desperate to win something, Schmidt a businessman who thinks he’s the answer to women’s prayers, and Nick, a law-school dropout who wants the world to leave him alone. The three tries to be supportive of Jess, though they find her unusual. The real question is whether three dysfunctional guys can deal with such an unconventional, yet adoring young female and survive to tell the tale?

Starring: Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone

2 Broke Girls

Two young women, Max and Caroline, meet while waitressing and form an unlikely friendship. Both dream of starting a successful business, but are hard up for ideas on how to raise the needed start-up cash. Though they start off being doubtful of the developing relationship, they discover delightful strengths and quirks about one another that might just see them through their plans and friendship.

Starring: Kat Dennings, Beth Behrs, Garrett Morris, Jonathan Kite

Modern Family

Three different, but related, families are facing life’s trials and tribulations in their own, and sometimes hilarious, ways. There are sweet victories, cultural clashes, and misunderstandings that abound, especially where precocious, scatterbrained kids are involved. There’s Jay, in a large and unusual family, trying to make his life work in his second marriage to a younger, gorgeous wife, while Jay’s daughter and her family are adding their own dynamics in the mix.

Starring: Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell

Dexter

Dexter Morgan is a Miami police forensics expert by day, who becomes a serial killer of criminals by night. But Dexter’s not just any serial killer, however: he only kills those criminals that fit some sort of “moral code” taught to him by his late father. Dexter’s boss may or may not know what he’s up to after hours, while somebody named “The Ice Truck Killer” challenges Dexter to a cat-and-mouse game through Miami.

Starring: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar

How I Met Your Mother

Ted enlists the help of his friends to help him find the woman of his dreams in New York City. Though it’s the year 2030, he’s telling his kids how he met their mother, beginning in 2005. His womanizing friend, Barney Stinton, is not impressed with Ted’s quest, however, and his mates are constantly in the picture of how he came to meet his kids’ mother. For some reason Ted believes his life mate was going to be Robin Scherbatsky, a news reporter and aspiring news anchor. Though they end up in a romantic relationship, Robin ends up as one of the “Aunts.”

Starring: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris
