New Study Shows That Liposuction Isn’t Just for Women

Most people, if they’ve even heard of body sculpting surgery, tend to picture women electing to restore or perfect a girlish figure. That’s not always the case, however.

One study performed by Surgery.org showed just how much liposuction has increased as a choice among males over the last few years. It’s proved to be an effective self-esteem booster, and an attractive option for men who wish to begin again.

Liposuction is the Most Popular Body Sculpting Surgery for Men

Though body sculpting surgery is still more often associated with women than with men, it’s not entirely gender specific. In fact, with regard to cosmetic procedures, liposuction has turned out to be the most popular among men.

This is due to the exceptional results of the procedure and faster recovery time than most other surgeries of this kind. According to Dr. Salemy MD, FACS, a respected plastic surgeon in Seattle, recovery for liposuction varies depending on the procedure and the individual, but is overall usually minimal. He tells most patients to set aside between 7 and 10 days to recover at home – not much in the scheme of things. He also claims that most bruising will heal within 2-3 weeks and most swelling will dissipate within 4-6 weeks. This is all usually much faster than most cosmetic surgeries, which sometimes require a full year for recovery.

In addition, liposuction is designed to target a variety of fat pockets on the body. Even though men typically appear to tone their bodies more easily than women, there are still areas of their physique that are difficult to shape even with the strictest diet and exercise.

“Men typically have subcutaneous fat deposits in the lower abdomen, flanks, chest, and under the chin,” Austin plastic surgeon Steven Holzman told Market Wired. Subcutaneous fat refers to the cells deep within the skin that stubbornly resist diet and exercise.

The areas Dr. Holman mentions are often the most resistant locations to toning, and the places where men usually desire to see the greatest results. Liposuction is the most commonly recommended procedure for any of these regions, so it’s only natural that it has become the most popular.

The long-lasting results are another aspect that appeals to men not interested in undergoing more plastic surgery for the sake of their appearance. Research has shown that liposuction not only removes fat cells, but effectively shrinks the remaining cells so that it’s not as easy to regain the flesh.

Liposuction can be amazing for improving self-esteem and overall health. The stereotypical man who doesn’t express concern about his appearance isn’t nearly as common as he once was, and the hope for a stronger, younger-looking physique is becoming a more widespread phenomenon in our society.

Men Can Be Good Candidates Too

Nowhere has it been written that you must be a woman to make a good candidate for liposuction. According to Dr. Salemy, anyone – male or female – who is in good overall health, has specific areas of fat that haven’t responded to diet and exercise, doesn’t smoke, and has realistic expectations about the procedure may see fabulous results.

The surgery takes just a couple of hours and is performed using laparoscopy, which means that it involves very small incisions that leave minimal scarring. It’s an outpatient procedure with a quick recovery time.

Given all the benefits of such a simple surgery, it’s no wonder that more male patients are jumping aboard.
