Cord Blood Saves Child’s Life!

After the recent story Cord Blood America to Open ‘State of the Art’ Cryogenic Lab in Las Vegas, further investigation led to an interesting discovery.

CorCell was the first company to have stored a sample that was transplanted and thus integral in the cure of childhood leukemia. The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics released the report, “First Report of Autologous Cord Blood Transplantation in the Treatment of a Child with Leukemia” in January 2007.

CorCell is the company that stores your child’s umbilical cord blood and Cord Blood America, Inc. (CBAI.OB) is the parent company. Most recently CBAI has been in the news for their state-of-the-art new cryogenic laboratory which will open in January next year.

An excerpt from CorCell’s website states:

“In this first known worldwide reported case, a 3-year old girl with leukemia was transplanted with her own stored umbilical cord blood” and “more than two years after transplantation with her own cord blood she is still free of leukemia at age 6.”

This is not “new” news, but if more people stored their children’s cord blood, it could be a common story. Unfortunately some people are polarized by the mention of stem cell research. But cord blood comes from born babies, so it is a non-controversial way to help further the science of healing. If people were more educated about stem cell research, they could store their own children’s cord blood or donate it for possible use by others who are a match. Cord blood stem cells offer a powerful and potentially life-saving resource for treating a growing number of ailments, including cancer, leukemia, blood disorders, and immune disorders.

Today when asked his opinion on recent advancements in stem cell research using cord blood, Matthew Schissler, CEO of Cord Blood America, Inc., said “We’re at the beginning of a medical revolution, one that involves stem cells for curative purposes. We’re pleased with the progress so far. The industry has a long way to go, but the early results show tremendous promise.”

Disclosure: Writer is Long CBAI.OB, but receives no compensation from the company.
