A Rasmussen Reports survey on July 20 and 21 of 1,000 likely voters showed the favorable rating for Donald Trump’s tops Arizona Senator John McCain. The poll results were released shortly after Trump said McCain, a Vietnam prisoner-of-war, was “not a war hero.”
The mainstream media went berserk, and Trump’s remarks were heavily covered and there were many opinions. It actually did little damage to his run for president, and in some people’s minds, it actually helped him.
Trump and McCain were statistically tied on favorability with Republicans. The billionaire developer received a very favorable opinion. Obviously, a lot of people agree with some of Trump’s off-the-cuff remarks about politicians and declared candidates, and that is helping him more than hurting his polling.
Favorable Trump Rating
The Rasmussen poll shows fifty-two percent of likely Republican voters see Trump in a favorable light. Fifty-one percent see McCain favorably. The interesting thing is that Trump registered a very favorable view of 23 percent to McCain’s 14 percent.
Looking at the unfavorable figures, both men were almost tied. Forty-five percent of Republicans have an unfavorable view of Trump, and almost half of those (22 percent) have a very unfavorable view of him. McCain got an unfavorability rating of 44 percent, with just over one third of those (Sixteen percent) rating him as very unfavorable.
Fewer Democrats like Trump. His favorability rating was 34 percent among likely voters, while 64 percent have an unfavorable view of him. The like McCain more. McCain’s favorable rating of 44 percent of all likely voters was ten points ahead of Trump. McCains unfavorable rating was 47 percent.
McCain: Trump Bringing Out The Crazies
The Rasmussen poll ran just after McCain accused Trump of bringing out “the crazies” with his comments about illegal immigration at an Arizona rally.
Trump, in his usual way, responded by going on the attack. He questioned McCain’s status as a war hero. Trump said, “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured? I like people who weren’t captured. Perhaps he is a war hero, but right now, he said some very bad things about a lot of people.”
There are around 11.3 million known illegal immigrants in the US. Just over half of them originated in Mexico (52%), but they come from all over the world, including the Middle East. Since Arizona passed SB1070, many illegals have left Arizona, but other states have not been so lucky. Nevada has the highest percentage of illegals (8%) within its population. Six states, California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Illinois hold 60% of the total number of illegals. [Pew Research]
