College Graduates, Unemployment and Bruce Springsteen

Something is stirring within the Obama-enabling media. More stories are beginning to surface that actually analyze issues unfavorable to the president’s re-election and they are coming from sources other than the usual suspects.

The reawakening of the left-leaning media is reminiscent of the infamous duo cover that Time and Newsweek featured over three decades ago. Both national weeklies featured an unknown singer named Bruce Springsteen – the very same week. Coincidence as both publications insisted? Or living proof of the mainstream media’s lemming-like ideology at work?

It appears for now that the liberal media has awakened from a prolonged robotic slumber – altogether, at once.

Similar to the “fluke” years ago, the liberal, mainstream media is speaking as one voice in a conspiracy-like unity revealing an uglier side of their “Camelot revisited” president and their endless media barrage of a ‘do-no-wrong’ Obama administration. The honeymoon between the liberal media and Obama White House appears over – for the time being.

This will likely be a temporary situation briefly interrupted due to the annoying public demand for real news and investigative reporting on issues other than Romney’s dog or partisan articles against their perceived enemies.

The topic they can’t ignore concerns 2012 college graduates and the real world environment they are facing with college degree in hand. Jobs within a majority of college graduate’s chosen profession are limited or non-existent.

The Class of ’12 has a better chance of landing a job at McDonald’s or a place on mom and dad’s couch than the “automatic” job that used to be synonymous with the label, “college grad.”

The president’s response to the dire predicament college graduates face is predictable itself:

More government intervention, more taxpayer subsidies, pardoned loans, late night talk shows to appear hip, food stamps, etc. Not a word about failed economic policies, continued high unemployment or failure to react after three plus years at the helm.

Translation? More debt and more government.

While there’s a demand in science, education and health fields, arts and humanities flounder. Average wages for those with bachelor’s degrees are down from 2000, largely blamed on technological changes that have eliminated mid-level jobs such as bank tellers and toll collectors. Huh?

Unemployment for job-seekers holding bachelor’s degrees fell to its lowest level last year in more than a decade. Quick math indicates this can’t be blamed (like everything else) on George W. Bush that would have been, in Obama’s first year in office.

By region, the Mountain West was most likely to have young college graduates jobless or underemployed (a statistic that is conveniently not reported in labor statistics) which amounts to 3 in 5. Texas and the southern U.S. were at the opposite end of the spectrum, largely due to less union involvement, “right to work” states and lower wages in general.

Translation? Clear signs of a rotting economy.

The situation has become epidemic not only for the lack of jobs, but also student loans that cannot or never will be paid back to the federal government (taxpayer) who provided them.

The White House response is for more intervention, forgiving part or all of enormous student taxpayer-funded loans or anything other than fixing their own policies and the clear lack of jobs throughout the country.

About 1.5 million, or 53.6 percent, of bachelor’s degree-holders under the age of 25 last year were jobless or underemployed, the highest share in at least 11 years. In 2000, the last year of the Clinton administration, the share was at a low 41 percent, before the dot-com bust erased job gains for college graduates in the telecommunications and IT fields.

Broken down by occupation, college grads were more likely to find employment in high school level jobs such as waitress, bartender or food-service helper than their college-educated fields of endeavor.

The mainstream media is devoting a shocking amount of time and space to national problems pertaining to the sagging economy. This has forced liberal, pro-Obama media outlets such as the New York Times and Huffington Post to break free of their invisible White House shackles to honestly report what most of the country sees every day.

The liberal media sees their stark choice. They can continue their biased approach that has bankrupted Newsweek and brought the razor-thin Time Magazine to its knees. That seems to be an option they are quickly abandoning.

The wake-up call they seem to be responding to is the recent upsurge in conservative publications and cable outlets such as the Fox News cable channel enjoying record ratings the past few years. Something that is not going unnoticed at NBC, the parent company of liberal “news experiment,” MSNBC, languishing in 28th place overall in cable program ratings.

Ideology is still a major factor in news coverage nationwide, but the almighty dollar may adjust their journalistic bent. For starters, “Hope and Change” within a formerly large piece of Obama’s base is transforming into “Hope and Spare Change.”

It’s hard to put a spin on that by blaming George W. Bush. Revenue and credibility are the new operative words for media operations in April, 2012.
