Enrique López Pérez: Coaching with Purpose, Building Champions for Life

For Enrique López Pérez, coaching isn’t just about producing winners—it’s about shaping people. The former ATP pro, who climbed to a ranking as high as #154, continues to leave his mark on the next generation of stars with a philosophy built on performance, personalization, and personal growth.

Having competed at the sport’s highest levels, López Pérez now works behind the scenes, helping young athletes navigate the long and often grueling road to the pros. But his approach goes beyond drills and strategy.

The Foundation: Footwork, Focus, and Future Planning

When asked about the cornerstone of his coaching strategy, López Pérez is clear: building players from the ground up—literally.

“In today’s fast-paced game, footwork is absolutely critical,” he says. “Technical development is a priority, but it must be matched with tactical awareness, physical conditioning, and mental strength. That’s what prepares juniors for national and international competition.”

From the earliest stages, López Pérez stressed the importance of fundamentals—especially in areas that can become limiting later if not addressed early.

“At a young age, I emphasize technical and mental training. They’re the base of everything. If you skip that foundation, you’re setting a ceiling on a player’s potential.”

A Tailored Approach for Every Stage

Whether he’s coaching a beginner or an emerging ATP player, López Pérez’s methodology remains the same: individualized and intentional.

“The first thing I do is analyze the player—physically, technically, and mentally,” he explains. “From there, I envision the type of player they can become. That vision guides everything we do.”

That strategic foresight allows him to customize training cycles and development paths with remarkable precision. Every drill, every off-court session, every tactical decision is part of a larger plan and as players advance, the support system evolves with them. This has led to some major successes, such as María Berlanga, U14 and U16 Spanish champion and distinguished US college player at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma and Gerard Campana Lee, former ITF junior #3 and current ATP #318.

Teamwork Beyond the Court

To López Pérez, no great player develops in isolation. That’s why collaboration with physical trainers, mental coaches, and other specialists is a non-negotiable part of the process.

“We set short-, medium-, and long-term goals as a team. Communication is daily. Everyone must be aligned with the player’s evolving needs—it’s the only way to ensure real progress.”

His leadership extends beyond technical coaching—he serves as the central hub for a full ecosystem of performance experts, making sure every detail feeds into the larger goal.

Balancing Excellence with Empathy

One of the standout traits in López Pérez’s coaching is his emotional intelligence, his goal is to build trust between him and the player.

“My approach is always integrative. Emotional development is just as important as technical growth,” he says. “I build strong relationships based on mutual respect. Players need to feel safe enough to express themselves—but also challenged enough to grow.”

As his players mature, that emotional foundation becomes even more crucial in handling the ups and downs of competition and pressure.

The Win That Meant More Than a Trophy

Among his many coaching successes, one moment stands out—a remarkable transformation of a former student who began as an unranked player and, under López Pérez’s guidance, climbed the ranks to capture their first ATP title. This achievement was the culmination of years of tailored training programs, mental conditioning, strategic match preparation, and unwavering belief in the player’s potential.

But for López Pérez, the most meaningful part wasn’t the trophy itself.
“During the trophy ceremony, the player thanked me publicly. That moment reflected all the work, the setbacks, the commitment. It wasn’t just about winning—it was about the journey we shared.”

That journey, marked by perseverance and mutual trust, demonstrated López Pérez’s ability not only to elevate technical performance but also to inspire the resilience and confidence needed to succeed on the world stage.

Life After Tennis Starts Here

For López Pérez, the goal isn’t just creating champions—it’s preparing individuals for whatever comes after the final match.

“I always prioritize the person. If we build good people, the tennis will follow,” he says. “I want my players to look back on their careers feeling proud of what they achieved—not just on the court, but in how they grew as human beings.”

In an era where youth development is increasingly high-stakes and high-pressure, Enrique López Pérez offers a refreshing reminder: a winning mentality goes way beyond the court.
