A Brief Overview of Several Different Types of Websites

Website design isn’t all that straight-forward. There is a massive scope of designs and templates for a huge variety of different website types. Here’s a quick overview of some of the main types of websites.

Blogs

A blog, shortened form web-log, is a site primarily consisting of articles, journal posts or editorials. Blogs vary from news to personal journals. The purpose of a blog varies, as does the content, they’re usually centered around either entertainment or edification.

Some businesses run a blog alongside their website to improve site traffic and entertain or inform their customers. A personal blog, in journal format, is usually used to share about your life with friends, family or fans. Other blog categories are parenting, DIY, gardening, cooking – you name it, there’s probably a blog about it.

Social Network

Facebook is probably the most popular, most well-known social network. The purpose of a social network is to allow people to connect and interact despite geographical distances. Some common features and functions include the ability to follow other people’s posts, view their profile and pictures, share pictures and videos and react to other people’s posts by commenting, liking or disliking, and sharing.

Brochure/Catalog

An online brochure or catalog can be more cost effective and have a wider reach than print media, and a lot of them also have some great website designs. You may find yourself wondering why companies with an online brochure don’t just make their website and e-commerce site. Usually, it’s because the product or service the company sells isn’t available for online purchase, though customers may still be able to make online bookings.

E-Commerce

This is the actual sales side of business. Companies that sell online vary in size, but most will need at least the basic features. An e-commerce website usually has facilities for online payments, a cart. where selected items are stored before purchase, and several payment options. They also tend to have web forms for collecting client data, from email address to shipping address.

Apps

It may come as a surprise, but quite a number of apps are quick-access, mobile-friendly versions of websites. Your banking app, and a lot of others that need to be connected to the internet, are that way because, though they use a slightly different layout, they’re essentially the website, partially preloaded on your phone.

Photo Sharing Websites

These include sites that are designed specifically around photo sharing. That includes the most popular photo sharing app/websites. The app side of things makes sharing quick and convenient. Most photo sharing apps and sites allow users to create collages, slideshows, and gifs, as well as edit their photos with effects and filters. For the “selfie generation,” these are some of the most popular sites and apps on the web.

These are just some of the more common, more popular types of websites – the ones you’ll likely come across every day. There are dozens more, wikis, personal sites, not to mention all the .mobi versions, designed specifically for browsing on mobile.
