What is Theosophy?

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, 1877 Meaning of the word “Theosophy”

“Theosophy” comes from the Greek “Theos” and “sophia” meaning literally “Divine Knowledge.” It is a body of knowledge – accumulated since time immemorial – that answers the great questions of life:

Who am I? Where am I going? What am I doing here? What is the nature of the soul? What is the origin of the universe and what can be said about the nature of divinity?

The term theosophy (in its Greek and other forms) had been used about one hundred or so times over two millennia in western civilization before Madame Blavatsky. The term came to be the most appropriate word to describe her teachings and so, with a capital “T,” Theosophy came to be the name given to that which she taught in the 19th century. Some have, quite understandably, extended the meaning of the word to cover that entire body of knowledge known to Blavatsky’s teachers – a portion of which was imparted to her.

While Theosophical principles form the basis of all student presentations at ULT, no one is asked to believe or accept these doctrines. Come explore them together with us as we journey through some of the most fascinating ideas of all time – Karma, Reincarnation, Human Solidarity, Spiritual Evolution, Dreams, Death, and more. See our “Current Program” Page for a list of meetings and current discussion topics.

Theosophical Motto

Some academics have taken to using the word to mean “comparative religion,” -now that the word has become well known- but this certainly dilutes the specific meaning it acquired during the time of Blavatsky. And regrettably, some writers in the 20th century have based themselves on her writings but subtly altered the teachings and then continued to call their writings “Theosophy” – misleading any number of students in the process.

Blavatsky Net defines Theosophy as “what Madame Blavatsky wrote.”

William Q. Judge

The following essay is by William Q. Judge, Synthesis of Occult Science: II

The “atom” and “monads” of the Secret Doctrine are very different from the atoms and molecules of modern science. To the latter these are mere particles of matter endowed with blind force; to the former, they are “dark nucleoles,” and potentially “Gods,” conscious and intelligent from their primeval embodiment at the beginning of differentiation in the dawn of the Manvantara. There are no longer any hard and fast lines between the “organic” and the “inorganic”; between the “living” and “dead” matter. Every atom is endowed with and moved by intelligence, and is conscious in its own degree, on its own plane of development. This is a glimpse of the One Life that- “Runs through all time, extends through al extent, Lives undivided, operates unspent.”

It may be conceived that the “Ego” in man is a monad that has gathered to itself innumerable experiences through aeons of time, slowly unfolding its latent potencies through plane after plane of matter. It is hence called the “eternal pilgrim.”
