In Business, Ask for Directions

Have you ever been in a strange town, and you don’t know how to get from where you are to the supermarket, gas station, or some other place you need to reach? It happens all the time. It can even happen in your own town – you simply aren’t familiar with all the nooks and crannies that exist. The same thing is true in your business. There are lots of nooks and crannies that you don’t know, but that you probably need to know.

What do you do when you’re lost out on the road? You pull into a gas station, call a friend, or bring a navigator with you who knows exactly how to get from point A to point B. You notice that there are some people who know every corner, every landmark, and every short cut.

Those people exist in business, too. They’re a little harder to find than people who know a geographical area, but as you grow your business, you’ll want to hook up with an expert navigator. This will be someone who’s been down the road that you are now traveling, and who can not only get you from point A to point B, but who can help you define the destination you are trying to reach.

ask for directions.
Don’t be afraid to ask for directions

When you get in your car, you usually know where you are trying to go. Frequently, however, entrepreneurs show up for work without knowing the destination they are trying so hard to reach. In my experience, many entrepreneurs can’t describe the destination they are seeking to reach in a meaningful way.

So, as you are working hard every day to build your company, or as you’re building your career, get a navigator. Get someone to help you to figure out what the directions are.
