For some reason that we don’t yet know, Al Gore has not yet endorsed Hillary Clinton. No reason has yet been given. Some people think it may have something to do with some problem between Al Gore and Bill Clinton back in the 1990s, when Gore was Clinton’s vice-president.
On Saturday last week Al Gore was in Cannes for the Lions festival. Asked whether he would endorse anyone for the 2016 presidential race, he didn’t take the bait. And why would he? He was not there for politics.
When the moderator asked Gore who might be the next president, he said, “I wouldn’t refuse to answer that question; I would try to cleverly dodge the question. I would say it’s actually too early.”
Despite the rumors, there is yet no word on whether Gore has plans to enter the race himself.
The event’s host said he personally hoped it would be Hillary Clinton. Gore just smiled and looked away.
This is not the first time that Gore has failed to endorse Hillary Clinton. Last year he described Hillary as ‘extremely capable’ but again declined an outright endorsement, saying it was too early to enter the race. Really?
Gore may have access to hundreds of millions of dollars from the sale of his media network two-years-ago. If so, he could use some of that for a run at the presidency himself.
Some say that Gore may be waiting for the Benghazi tragedy and the Clinton Foundation to weaken Hillary’s support. That would leave a space for another well funded candidate to enter the race.
But so far Hillary Clinton seems to be way out in front of any other candidate on the Democratic side. Of course there is her old nemesis, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Sanders is beginning to make headway in the Iowa and New Hampshire caucus and primary polls released last week. The voters in those two states go to the polls in early 2016.
We may have to wait to see if any of Hillary’s baggage blows up on her before we hear from Al Gore again.
