US Condemns Aerial Bombing in Civilian Hospital in South Kordofan

Two People Wounded

The United States of America today expressed condemnation on the recent aerial bombing of the Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) hospital in Frandala, Southern Kordofan by the Sudan Armed Forces.

In her remarks in Washington DC, US Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki reiterated that targeted attacks by the Government of Sudan against civilians and humanitarian workers in conflict zones demonstrate the government’s disregard for the wellbeing of its people and its international obligations.

“The United States reiterates its call upon the Government of Sudan to halt its campaigns of armed violence against its own citizens.” – Ms. Psaki

Ms. Psaki highlighted that these recent attacks further undermine the enormous humanitarian response needed to support those who require basic life-saving services.

Civilian Hospital Targeted For Aerial Raid

Two people were wounded when a Sudanese warplane targeted one of the few hospitals in South Kordofan State.

The warplane dropped 13 bombs, wounding one patient and hospital worker.

South Kordofan has been plagued by ethnic clashes where rebels have been fighting the Sudanese military since 2011.

This bombing of Frandala hospital is the first but was previously bombed in June 2014.

The humanitarian crisis that has engulfed the African country affects more than 1.7 million people and has caused nearly 265,000 Sudanese refugees to flee to South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

On June 2011, the United Nations human rights office had received “extremely worrying” reports of civilian casualties and massive displacement of people, amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Sudanese state of Southern Kordofan, where forces of the northern and southern governments are engaged in fighting.

The northern army known as the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) is reported to be engaged in fighting with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) of Southern Sudan, the semi-autonomous region that is due to become an independent State on July 2011. Clashes have taken place in the Southern Kordofan capital of Kadugli and surrounding areas.
