Jewell ‘The First Lady of Death Row Records’

CANADA (Sasha Stoltz Publicity): Jewell has proven herself as “The First Lady of Death Row Records” with her self-titled album, which came out two days before Thanksgiving last month. With tracks such as “Church Girl Sad World,” “I Came When You Were Alone,” and “Come Back to Heaven,” it is such a surprise as to why she didn’t become a breakout star over a decade ago.

The 1990s were the era of “female empowerment” not only on the small screen with Xena: Warrior Princess and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, but also on the charts with Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, TLC, Queen Latifah, and Mariah Carey. Had her self-titled album came out around that time, there would have been an audience for Jewell, and hopefully, there still is.

Unlike the other CDs, this is quickly one of the better favorites (personally, one of mine) released so far from the Death Row Vault.

To quote Sam Sneed: “U Better Recognize” (ironically, “Recognize” is the first track off Jewell’s album) Jewell, who has two L’s, not one.
