Republic of Costa Rica Celebrates National Day

The citizens of Republic of Costa Rica today celebrated their 190th anniversary of independence.

Costa Rica has a $2.2 billion per year tourism industry. It is the most visited nation in the Central American region, with two million foreign visitors in 2008. Costa Rica’s tourism now earns more foreign exchange than bananas and coffee combined, according to Wikimedia.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Republic of Costa Rica on their National Day.

“As the Freedom Torch arrives in Cartago and Costa Ricans across the country reflect with pride on your country’s strong traditions of protecting democracy, preserving the environment, and respecting human rights, know that the American people stand with you.” -Ms. Clinton

She emphasized that Costa Rica’s commitment to creating a bright future for its nation’s youth is an inspiration and provides the foundation for our common values and strong partnership.

“Whether you participate in the “lantern parades” or you celebrate over dinner with family and friends, I wish all Costa Ricans a happy independence day and reaffirm our commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship between our countries.” -Ms. Clinton

Costa Rica is located between eight and 12 degrees north of the Equator which makes the climate tropical year round. However, the country has many microclimates as well.
