Pre War is no Snorrrrr with her New “Green” Crown, Designed by artist Carson Ferri-Grant with ‘Hanging Gardens’ on top of this NYC building.
One hundred years later, the famed 1910 Cornwall building, recently feature in the NY Times, receives her crowning Penthouse glory, in time for her centennial birthday. Just a mire century ago, once productive farmland under this 90th Street and Broadway NYC building, the new Penthouse is keeping with ‘green traditions’ by growing flowers, blueberries and herbs in the outdoor roof terrace garden.
Known for his 1970’s pro-environment art exhibitions, Carson Ferri-Grant designed his new home as an open loft-type environment, incorporating some U.S. Green Building Council, LEED-EBOM solutions; as solar lighting, skylights, dual-room translucent sharing of sun light, multi-temperature rated building materials, maximum cross-breeze and venting placement of windows and doors, ductless central HVAC system with individually controlled cooling/heating units, and Energy Star appliances.
The environmentally friendly gardens which generate oxygen for the greater NYC good, nurture Morning Dove and Finch migration habits, and feed the occasional berry-picking visitors, are a peaceful resting place for endangered butterflies and bumble bees that thrive on the perennials.
An eight year in development project, with the architectural/engineering approved plans, multiple Coop board approvals, NYC Department of Buildings filings and inspections, and a dedicated artist’s passion, the new Penthouse apartment was completed June 2010.
