Book Review: The Emerging Mind, co-written by Karen Nesbitt Shanor, PH.D.

The Emerging Mind although not light reading, is fascinating. Authors such as Deepak Chopra, Frank Putnam, Jayne Gackenbach, and Karl Pribram contribute to this interesting compilation on the meaning of consciousness.

This book was the first time I had heard of Quantum Theory, and it inspired me to look for more books covering the same topics. Besides quantum theory, it also includes many other interesting topics concerning discovering the different states of consciousness, including hypnosis. This book explores the levels of consciousness we share – our auto-pilots, our sleep, our consciousness under hypnosis or drugs, our waking lives, our memories. On top of this, although the book is not intellectually light, it’s certainly accessible, which not all books of this kind are. The ideas are relatively easy to follow and the wisdom contained in each chapter is astounding.

If there is a flaw in this book, it is that it professes to help with issues such as improving self-esteem and alleviating depression and I’m not sure it does. I think it shows the mechanics of how one can, but in an easier said than done way.

Regardless, this is an extremely interesting book with chapters by some of the most intelligent writers on consciousness out there. Recommended.
