Presentation to Detail High-Speed Shared Workflows and Large-Scale, Multi-Tier Online Archiving in Advanced Data Center Environment

Quantum Corp. (NYSE: QTM), the leading global specialist in backup, recovery and archive, announced today that CERN, the European organization for nuclear research, will present at Storage Networking World (SNW) Fall 2010 on how it accelerates research and discovery using Quantum's StorNext® data management software.

Collecting data from the collision between billions of particles requires not only a reliable and scalable IT infrastructure, but also an efficient and effective way to record and analyze the billions of bits of data generated every second. The ALICE project at CERN, one of the largest experiments in the world devoted to recounting the birth of matter, involves 1,000 physicists, engineers and technicians from 30 countries, resulting in unprecedented demands for data acquisition, selection, transfer, storage and handling.

At SNW, Pierre Vande Vyvre, project leader for ALICE data acquisition, will discuss steps his team took to implement the right storage solution, the specific needs of high-performance computing environments, and how CERN was able to architect its storage system to fully understand and exploit massive amounts of data for new scientific discoveries.

Session Title: Beyond High Performance Computing: What Matters to CERN
Date: Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010
Time: 3:05 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. CDT
Location: The Gaylord Texan in Dallas, TX

About CERN
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. At CERN, the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter -- the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature. Founded in 1954, the CERN Laboratory sits astride the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. It was one of Europe's first joint ventures and now has 20 Member States. For more information, please visit cern.ch.
