The cable network, BET (Black Entertainment Television), has recently announced that they and Marvel Animation are bringing The Black Panther onto the small screen as an animated series.
Providing the voice for the African-American superhero is Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou. The series, which is slated to debut next year, will be based from the first six issues that were written by Reginald Hudlin, who will also be its co-executive producer.
“The Black Panther animated series is Marvel’s entree into prime-time animation,” responds Marvel Animation President Eric Rollman, “and Djimon raises the bar for all involved as we bring the best in the animation business together to execute on that vision.”
However, this isn’t Djimon’s first foray into the comic book genre. He fought evil alongside Keanu Reeves as Papa Midnight in 2005’s DC Comics’ film adaptation of Constantine. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962, The Black Panther has been known by his birth name T’Challa, and went on to become the first modern Black superhero.
“It’s a blessing for African Americans and minorities to have a Super Hero they can identify with” states Hounsou. “While the Black Panther is a powerful force for good, he is also a respected world leader who takes pride in his African heritage. He embodies the past and future of his culture, demonstrating the endless possibilities of an Africa that is truly free.”
