The Joke is Definitely Not on Obama

What was supposed to be a surprise appearance of standup comedy has turned into standup drama for Bernie Mac. The 53-year-old comedian showed up at a fundraiser for Barack Obama inside the Hyatt Residence Hotel Friday night in downtown Chicago. Mac was on stage for 10 minutes talking menopause, sexual infidelity and promisuity using foul language from time to time — but one person in the audience wasn’t laughing because it was disrespectful to women.

“It’s not funny. Let’s get Barack on” shouted a man in the crowd, which paid $2,300 each to support the Democratic presidental candidate.

The incident also showed interest to Obama’s campaign, who attacked Mac for his material.

“Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn’t condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate” spokeswoman Jen Psaki stated.

When Obama was finally onstage 15 minutes later, he tried to lighten the intense mood with a joke of his own.

“We can’t afford to be divided by race” he said. “We can’t afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you’ve got to clean up your act next time. This is a family affair. By the way, I’m just messing with you, man.”

Born and raised in the Windy City, Mac stated that he supports Obama, whom he calls a “man’s man”.

“People like rumors” he continued. “They’re going to say things like you was at the club with Lil’ Kim, and you and Kanye West got into a fist fight. You can’t get upset. You’ve got to keep hope alive.”
