Citizens of Dominica Celebrate Their Independence Day

The citizens of Dominica today celebrated their Independence Day.

Dominica has been nicknamed the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean” for its unexploited natural beauty. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, home of many rare plant, animal, and bird species, according to Wikipedia.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Dominica.

Secretary Clinton stressed that the United States and the Commonwealth of Dominica share a strong relationship based on mutual respect, shared values, and common interests. Both countries are working together to ensure respect for the rule of law, strengthen regional security and stability and promote human rights. She stated that their partnership through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative and the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas is enhancing prosperity throughout the region and helping to build a stronger and brighter future for all people.

“As you celebrate this special day with family, friends and loved ones, know that the United States is a committed partner and friend, and we look forward to finding even more ways to work together. Happy independence day and best wishes for a year of peace, prosperity and opportunity.”-Ms. Clinton

Bananas and other agriculture dominate Dominica’s economy. Nearly one-third of the labor force works in agriculture.
