Holland through to the World Cup final after 5 goal thriller against Uruguay
After a few days without a game the World Cup continued tonight with the first of the two Semi Finals as Holland went up against the underdogs Uruguay.
Uruguay had the better start in this game and played without fear, knowing that the pressure was on Holland who were expected to win. Despite creating no chances and not playing remarkable well Holland were the ones to open the scoring. A shot out of nothing from Van Bronckhurst smashed into the net, one of the goals of the tournament and a great opener for this game.
Uruguay were level before halftime though when Diego Forlan curled a shot in from distance for his fourth goal of the competition. Things were looking bright for an attacking Uruguay in the second half but Holland scored again to dampen the spirits of the South Americans. Sneijder was on target this time to get his fifth goal of the tournament when his shot deflected off one defender, skimmed another and then rolled under Van Persie’s foot before nestling in the corner.
Minutes later Robben latched onto a Kuyt cross to head home a sweet goal and put the Dutch 3-1 up. Uruguay were deflated but they did grab a last ditch consolation goal in stoppage time which made for a few nail-biting and exciting minutes if nothing else.
Holland now advance into the Final (played Sunday) and they will eagerly await the result of Germany vs Span who play tomorrow night. Spain were the favorites to win this World Cup from the start but Germany have been one of the best performing sides and could do to Spain what they did to Argentina and England. The odds are wide open for that game and are a great prospect for any gambler.
