A lot was expected this afternoon as Argentina began their World Cup campaign against Nigeria with legend Maradona at the helm and rising star Messi leading the line.
Messi did show the world his skills early on and found it incredibly easy to jink through a Nigerian defense that couldn’t seem to stop the wonderkid. He got a few shots off on target but was denied time after time by a fantastic display for Nigerian ‘keeper Enyeama. Higuain also threatened but it was defender Heinze who grabbed the only goal for Argentina when his diving header flew into the top corner early on.
Argentina dominated the first half but Nigeria finally found their feet in the second and threatened to destroy the frail 1-0 lead. The play soon split and the game swung both ways with chances for either sides, but Argentina held on to their minor 1-0 lead and saw this game out.
A little unimpressive in the end from the South Americans, but they did show some flashes of brilliance – mostly from the feet of Lionel Messi.
