‘Peace-in’ continues in office of Rep. Doris Matsui; anti-war advocates refuse to leave in effort to end war and occupation of Iraq
Anti-war advocates are refusing to leave the Federal Courthouse offices of Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, here Monday after beginning a “peace-in” at 8:30 a.m. in an effort to convince the lawmaker to publicly announce she will not vote to further fund the war and occupation of Iraq.
The demonstrators from the Sacramento Coalition to End the War – who said Rep. Matsui has been unresponsive to pleas of peace groups and voters – have declared they will remain in her office daily until Rep. Matsui tells them she will not vote to further fund the war.
There have been no incidents in the “peace-in” said Maggie Coulter with the coalition, but added that one delivery person signed onto a letter asking Matsui to help end the war after remarking that her brother had spent several tours in Iraq and was visibly affected by his experience.
The coalition pointed to the more than 3,000 US dead, and tens of thousands wounded along with hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead and injured during the Iraq war.
“There will be no more free passes for Rep. Matsui. By cutting off funding the war will end, as will the killing and maiming of tens of thousands Americans and Iraqis, and the waste of hundreds of billions of tax dollars,” said George Main, Veterans for Peace of Sacramento president.
