Five months ago on the 8th of January, 2011 while holding an event to meet and greet constituents outside a local grocery store, tragedy struck when Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was gunned down in an assassination attempt. During the assassination attempt, six people died and a dozen others were wounded by the lone assassin Jared Loughner.
Nine year old, Christina Taylor Green was the youngest among the six who were killed during the shooting.
Giffords is the wife of Astronaut Mark Kelly and the congressional representative for the State of Arizona. Giffords’ recovery has been progressing at a somewhat miraculous pace. In May she was able to fly to Florida to attend the launch of Space Shuttle Endeavor which was piloted by her husband, Mark Kelly.
Over the weekend, Giffords released on her Facebook page the first public photo of her since the assassination attempt. The photograph was snapped by P.K. Weis on the 17th of May outside the TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, the rehabilitation center where Giffords is undergoing intensive rehabilitation therapy.
Giffords’ hair has started to grow out in the photo and there are very few signs of the shooting other than a small scar where her throat tube was inserted. In the photo, Giffords is smiling and looks gorgeous and is quickly returning to her old self. Giffords is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming weeks.
