What may be the beginning of an entirely new investigation in Washington began Sunday morning. It was at that time that two officials, one from the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division and another from its legal division met with FBI Director Christopher Wray. Their discussion concerned a simple memo that could create the biggest political scandal in U.S. history.
Shortly after that meeting on Monday, the House Intelligence Committee voted along party lines to release the memo. That naturally created a furor with the Democrats. This is not a memo that will help their ongoing disruption of the Trump administration.
The most prominent spokesman for the Democrats was the first to speak out. Top Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff called it a “very sad day.” How he came to that conclusion is simple; he meant for the Democratic Party.
President Trump is now charged with the task of approving the memo’s release. It is a decision that will almost inevitably be in the affirmative. He has physically taken the memo into his hands.
It is assumed the memo is solid proof of an anti-Trump dossier that was used to secure or extend surveillance warrants for Americans, including a Trump associate. As Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) told “Fox & Friends,” “If you’re interested whether or not the dossier was used in court proceedings, whether or not it was funded by political opponents, you’ll want to see the memo.”
The situation has reached this point after the FBI and Justice Department struggled for over a year to avoid providing surveillance-related records to Congress. It reached its crescendo earlier this month when Republican committee Chairman Devin Nunes threatened to move forward with contempt of Congress citations.
The trail is now open for additional FBI and DOJ interviews. Those are expected in early February. Additionally, intelligence committee Republicans have two outstanding records requests. They include texts between FBI official Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, and records documenting an April 2017 meeting between DOJ lawyer and senior special counsel prosecutor Andrew Weissmann and a major media organization.
It appears the whole truth around the inference by Democrats of “Russian collusion” with Trump’s campaign for the presidency and beyond is about to come full circle. From all indications, most likely to be released shortly, will be a game changer in Donald Trump’s presidency.
