The far left has been desperately seeking one issue to unite their base of support. They settled on their advocacy for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Whether Democratic National Chairman Tom Perez came up with that “brilliant” idea, or it was a group effort, it is a huge mistake.
Nevertheless, they have designed a new bill that would essentially eliminate ICE. It is backfiring on them big time. So much so that it will make them abandon the bill if it gets brought to the House floor for a vote. One must wonder where the common-sense moderate Democrats have gone?
It was originally dreamed up to win over supporters for the party. The political prize was increasing the ranks of immigrants, legal and otherwise. When it came to crunch time, there was nothing but crickets and sagebrush.
Republicans Call Out Democrats
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he plans to bring the bill up for a vote, and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) said it’s time for Democrats to show where they stand on the public record. They are calling them out and the Democrats are terrified.
Scalise told The Hill in a recent interview, “Democrats have been trying to make July 4th about abolishing ICE, which is a radical, extreme position that would lead to open borders and undermine America’s national security,” Scalise told The Hill. “I think it’s the wrong approach. I think everyone ought to be on record about where they stand on that issue.”
The Democrats are now caught in a political vise with nowhere to run. They will regret the big idea of abolishing ICE at the polls in November. Most Americans are outraged and they plan to vote in large numbers.
Not to be swayed, Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), and Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) introduced the Establishing a Humane Immigration Enforcement System Act last Thursday. It would “establish a Commission tasked with establishing a humane immigration enforcement system” and “terminate Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” among other purposes.
You can’t make this sort of stuff up. Almost as if they want to intentionally upset a clear majority of Americans, they persist in pandering to the tiny far left. Can we see the next George McGovern as their candidate for president in 2020? It’s highly possible at this juncture in the fractured and disorganized Democratic Party.
