DADT: Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell has been the center of debate for many years and we still have made no headway with it. On the 21st of September the debate was blocked….we couldn’t even start debating it. The excuse was, they needed to review it first which won’t be completed until December, then the debate could start and the repeal wouldn’t happen until 60 days after that. What is more frustrating is that President Obama appealed this decision.

I understand the politics, I understand that you can’t just repeal a law; however, this law is against the First and Fifth Amendments of the constitution as well as just being complete bigotry. In no other work place is anyone allowed to discriminate against someone because of their sexual orientation but somehow we have allowed it in the US Military.

Discrimination is always horrible, but to discriminate against someone because of whom they choose to take into their private bed is just ludicrous. There have been an estimated 1000 soldiers discharged under DADT from 1997 to 2009, people who could have made a difference and saved a life.

When are we going to understand that we can no longer allow the religious right to overpower and brain wash this country simply because of their own idiotic fears? I know it will take time and we will soon get there, but I think it’s ridiculous that this is even a discussion.

FACT: Nearly every NATO ally and European country allows gays and lesbians to serve “openly” and have permitted it for some time with no adverse impact on military effectiveness, unit cohesion, morale or readiness.

FACT: These militaries are the very same ones that fight alongside of us in Afghanistan and Iraq today. Not a single one of these countries’ military have found any negative impact.

Yet, we still have this ridiculous law on the books in the home of the free and the land of the brave…..I guess there is a select few who get to decide who gets what freedom.
