Study Puts New Light on Sexsomnia

Sexsomnia is a disorder where people initiate a form of sexual activity as they sleep, more common than realized per a study.

Researchers studied 832 patients, 428 men and 404 women that were found to have the disorder.

They filled out a questionnaire about sleep behaviors, fatigue levels, degree of sleepiness and mood feelings descriptions.

Sexsomnia is more common in men than women Canadian researchers found.

“There have been no previous studies of how frequently sexsomnia occurs,” Sharon A. Chung, PhD- Sleep Research Laboratory in Psychiatry at the University Health Network, Toronto.

“While our findings of 8% of people reporting sexsomnia seem really a high number, it should be stressed that we only studied patients referred to a sleep clinic so we expect the numbers to be lower in the general population.”
