HIV Cases in Assam Linked to Blood Transfusion

A sensational report has came to light on the World Blood Donor Day in north eastern Indian state of Assam as four HIV cases have been detected in Darrang district.

The transmission of the disease was reportedly through blood transfusions in a government hospital.

According to report, four HIV cases were detected in the district who took blood from the blood bank of Mangaldoi civil hospital.

“All the patients were admitted at the government hospital from 2011 to 2013 and the blood bank of the hospital had given blood to the patients,” Diganta Sarma, a local journalist said.

.

“Without check and screening of the blood samples, the hospital authorities gave blood to the patients, who were admitted at the hospital,” Diganta Sarma said.

Meanwhile, local people alleged that at least 105 patients of Darrang and Udalguri district took blood from the blood bank of the government hospital in past two years.

In addition, a HIV/AIDS patient and professional blood donor Zehirul Islam who donated blood in the government hospital said he had donated blood in the hospital on four different occasions.

Several organizations alleged that the state health department would not take any necessary steps after four HIV cases were detected in the district.

According to Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS), 7500 HIV and AIDS cases have been detected in the state so far.

In Kamrup district alone, 3737 cases have been detected so far, which is the highest in the state followed by Cachar district (1308 cases).
