Health Insurance for Pregnant Women

Having a baby is one of the greatest joys in the life. After all, there is no greater gift than the gift of life. But of course, you also have to make sure that before the baby comes, you are ready for many things. If you are already pregnant or planning to become pregnant, one of the most important things to do is to buy affordable health insurance.

Pregnancy is a wonderful experience, but it can also be very costly. There are a lot of expenses that you need to be prepared for – such as regular checkups, laboratory tests, and of course, the delivery itself. Once your baby is born, you also need to allow for pediatric visits as well as immunizations for your little one.

A good insurance coverage is necessary, given that you will depend on it for your prenatal, maternity, and postpartum care.

According to the Affordable Care Act, maternity coverage is one of the ten essential health benefits covered by any Obamacare-approved insurance plan. It is mandatory, so you need to start your search for an affordable yet high-quality health insurance plan.

In case you are not aware of it yet, health insurance plans cover maternity services such as outpatient and inpatient services, newborn baby care, as well as lactation counselling and breast pump rental. Outpatient services include your visits to the doctor, screenings for gestational diabetes, laboratories, and medications, while inpatient services include hospitalization and professional fees.

Get in touch with health insurance providers and see what each of them can offer, especially in regards to the premium. During the open enrollment period, you can always enroll in a new plan, or if you have an existing one, you can change it to a different plan which will be more suitable for your pregnancy.

If you miss the open enrollment, you can still enroll in a health insurance plan, but you cannot do so while you are still pregnant. That is because pregnancy is not a qualifying event, and therefore does not make you eligible to enroll in a new plan or make changes to your existing one any time of the year.

However, the birth of your baby does qualify you for a special enrollment period, so you will have 60 days during which you and your spouse, along with your child or children, can enroll in a new health plan or modify your current one.

Keep in mind as well that being covered does not mean everything will be free. There will also be out-of-pocket costs, so you still need to be prepared. It is always better to be ready than to be caught off-guard by a major expense when the big day comes.

As an expecting mother, simply buying affordable health insurance is not enough. You need to be well informed about the details and coverage. Make sure that you understand every little detail to avoid potential stress and surprise medical bills. Also, it would help to get to know more about state-based programs for pregnant women and children, because you and your baby may be eligible and that can also help a great deal.
