Morgan Freeman and The Dark Knight

Morgan Freeman’s publicist, Donna Lee has stated that the 71-year-old actor is doing well following the surgery to reconnect nerves and repair damage to his left arm and hand after his car accident on Sunday night.

She also said that the surgery went on for four and a half hours last night that featured “recovery and he is in good spirits and was visiting with family members this morning”.

“He was walking this (morning), and is looking forward to his release as soon as possible” she continued.

The investigation of the accident is still pending by the Mississippi Highway Patrol, according to spokesperson Sgt. Ben Williams, who also said that neither alcohol nor drugs played a part in it.

And in other good news, Freeman’s latest film, The Dark Knight broke another box office record: grossing $400 million dollars in just 18 days, beating 2004’s Shrek 2. The movie had a record opening of $158.4 million in its first weekend. Warner Bros. is predicting that it’ll bump the original Star Wars out of the #2 spot on the all-time box office charts in a couple of weeks, right behind Titanic. Still, in today’s dollars, The Dark Knight will have to rake in $900 million in ticket sales to match it with both films.

Since its debut, much buzz of The Dark Knight‘s enormous success is due to Heath Ledger’s post-humous performance as the psychotic Joker. Some critics stated it may lead to an Oscar nomination.

“There’s no question that Heath Ledger’s performance has made cinematic history” said Warner’s general sales manager Jeff Goldman. “It’s one of the most important or memorable villains ever. That added to it, but I think you have to look at a film in it’s entirely. It’s the marvelous job the filmmakers and the actors did.”
